Rebel Boys Basketball Stings the Hornets in Round 2 of the County Tourney

Rebels won by only one point in the prior meeting with Beech Grove. FC fell to the Hornets the night before and the Rebels beat Perry in a close battle the night before as well. Stewart came out firing with back to back three point shots within 2 minutes of the opening tip. He added a third three before the rebels concluded the 1st quarter up 7, 18 to 11.

Christian opens the second quarter with yet another three ball. Rebels open up a 13 point lead with 6:18 to go in the first half. Sonderman was powerful underneath pill by down second chance shots and heading to the line several times.

Rebels dominated Hornets and led by 16 at the half 35 to 19. By the end of the 3rd quarter Rebels were up 54-40 with Stewart sinking a 25 foot bomb at the buzzer. Stewart simply could not miss. Hornets pulled out the full court press early in hopes of closing the deficit. Rebels respond with great cross court passing. And impressive defense of their own.

Rebels Never Quit!

April 4, 2016

The atmosphere was electric at the storied Southport fieldhouse. Roncalli was fully aware of the task that was before them. This heavily talented Southport team has played together for several years, loaded with talent and just recently beat their greatest obstacle to achieving any meaningful success in the IHSAA state tournament, Pike. But the Rebels thrive on that kind of pressure.

As the first half came to a close, the Rebels were right where they wanted to be; up 7 points, with momentum clearly on their side. Christian Stewart, once again, proved to be the difference, with timely steals and absolute ball control that kept the Cardinals frustrated. The Rebels scored 23 points in the 2nd quarter alone. Southport scored 24 points the entire first half. The heavily recruited Joey Brunk was held to just 7 points at the half. A job well done by big man, Collin Sonderman.

Andrew Fey hit timely three point shots that ignited the team and almost drained a game tying three towards the end. Bryson Meek and Christina Stewart ended the contest with 17 points each. Kellen Schreiber, Logan Schott and Jack Hegwood did an outstanding job keeping the middle locked down. Although the Rebels lost 60 - 57, I think everyone felt good about the effort, and with nearly everyone returning next year, particularly excited about the future of Rebel basketball.

The Rebels are now 8-5 on the season and winners of three of their last four games. They host Center Grove at 7:30 on Saturday night (Jan. 23).

Rebels Dominate Hornets

The game was tight early and the Rebels didn’t blink. Like most Rebel teams, poise and focus were the overwhelming attributes at play against a very feisty Hornets team. The Hornets were so feisty that their coach was given a technical foul at the start of the second half and the Rebels pounced. Sensing the unraveling, Stewart thought it would be nice to toss up back to back 3 point shots. This only widened the lead. Sonderman was a very disruptive force all night and the again, the Hornets had no answer. Schreiber, Schott and Hegwood were equally disruptive underneath. As the pace quickened, the Rebels put on a shooting clinic led by Stewart and Fey.

Sonderman was disruptive all night. This was early in the game but indicative of what was to follow.
