2016 Boys Cross Country Team

2016 Season Review

With the largest team in program history, the 38-man boys’ cross country team logged 26 personal bests and three season bests at the Golden Bear Invitational at Shelbyville, which was the final race of the regular season. The varsity group advanced to the semi-state after fifth-place finishes in the sectional and the regional. The season ended with an 18th-place finish in the fastest and deepest semi-state in Indiana.

Sophomore Nick Perkins had the best individual cross country season in school history. At the Golden Bear Invitational, he ran a school-record 15:55.17, topping the old mark of 16:04. One month later, at the semi-state on the same Shelbyville course, he ran a 15:55.60, missing his school record by 0.43 seconds. He owns the only sub-16:00 times in school history. Additionally, he broke Roncalli’s home-course school record with a 16:53. Based on his performances in the races, he earned All-Conference, All-Sectional and All-Regional honors. His eighth-place finish in the Marion County meet tied the program’s best individual finish. His fourth-place finish at sectional was Roncalli’s best in 13 years and his time of 16:42 was the program’s fastest time on the New Palestine course. He followed that up with a fourth-place finish at regional, and a time of 16:33, which is the program’s fastest regional time on the Rushville course.

Senior Neil O’Brien finished his four-year varsity career with a personal best of 16:36, which ranks 17th on the program’s all-time list. Junior Dave Schrader ran a 16:44 on the Shelbyville course for the third-fastest time ever by a junior and the 19th-fastest overall. Freshman Chris Figueroa’s personal best of 17:34 ranks as the fourth-fastest freshman time in program history. Figueroa and fellow freshman Sam George both earned Marion County All-Freshman honors based on their performances in the Marion County freshman race.

Perkins was named the team’s MVP and senior Joe Burns won the team’s mental attitude award. O’Brien and senior Timmy Miller were selected to the Academic All-State team by the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches (IATCCC). Senior Josh Ford and junior Dave Schrader were picked to the honorable mention Academic All-State team by the IATCCC.
