Despite the loss of four seniors and three scholarship winners off of a team that finished 25-7 in 2007, the 2008 Rebel volleyball team looks to make its mark with a mix of veteran leadership and new faces that will return county and post-season crowns back to Roncalli. Two players return who garnered 2nd Team All-State honors last season as well as three other returning letterwinners. That group will blend in with 6 newcomers who will be seeing exclusive varsity action for the first time.
In the middle, two significant starters return, including 2nd Team All-State performer, senior Meghan Snyder. Joining her will be senior Katelyn Dawson, who is moving over from the right side. Junior Natalie Cahill will provide depth to give an extremely balanced offensive and defensive option for new coach Missy Marsh.
It is on the outside that the Rebels have the least experience. Four players who are playing varsity volleyball full-time for the first time will battle it out to lead the Rebels in hitting. Cahill saw some varsity time in 2007. She will be challenged by senior Erin Bateman, junior Lauren Ross, sophomore Hannah Hartnett and sophomore Brooke Sahm.
Defense should be the highlight of the Rebels game plan in 2008, with a deep and talented pool of back row players. Replacing four-year starter Kaylee Schembra at libero will be returning two-time letterwinner Caitlin Hansen. Returning letterwinner Jordan Sudzina will join Hansen on the back line. Also looking at considerable playing time as defensive specialists are senior Ashley Holmes and Junior Amanda Finch.
2nd Team All-State and All-County sophomore setter Alexis Waugh returns to quarterback the Rebels. Once again the Rebels will play one of the more demanding schedules in the state of Indiana. The 2008 team will need its veteran leadership to show the mental and physical toughness necessary to bring in the newcomers and develop great chemistry.
