2007 Season Review
The 2007 Volleyball SEASON was a great season. We all knew going into the summer and fall that we would have our work cut out for us and that defending the state title would be no easy task. We had graduated 4 college scholarship seniors including the Gatorade Player and National Setter of the Year. Living the dream of that magical ’06 state championship and faced with the reality of defending that title was a tall order and sometimes heavy burden for this 07 team…at least in tournament play. The biggest issue with our team was the ability to finish a tournament. We were runner up in the Providence and LaPorte Invitational, and then the County and Sectional Tournaments. We only lost 2 season matches and 4 tournament matches all season. The Rebel team traveled to one end of the state to the other and played the best competition in Indiana. The four seniors Caitlin Conover, Kate Eldred, Brianna Kern and Kaylee Schembra led this team to a 25-7 record. This team beat a lot of ranked teams and were beaten only by ranked teams; 2-3A and 5-4A teams. .
The Rebels placed at least 1 player on every honor team possible. Senior Kaylee Schembra was named to every honor team possible for the 2nd straight year. Joining Schembra on every team except the Super Team was senior Kate Eldred. Senior Brianna Kern and frosh Alexis Waugh were named 2nd team by the MCCGSA, the Indpls Star, and all state. Meghan Snyder was also 2nd team all state. Roncalli was the only 3A school to have more than 1 player selected to the South All Star Team. Kaylee Schembra, Kate Eldred and Brianna Kern made up a trio of Rebels for the South All Stars. So far, 2 seniors have received volleyball scholarships, both in Division 1. Kate Eldred has signed to play for University of Illinois at Chicago. Kaylee Schembra has signed to follow her 2 older brothers to Ball State University. Even though the 2007 team fell short of finishing better in tournament play, the season was very successful and fun. Our Purdue camp and trips to the beach, Redamaks, Oinks and the Dunes in northern Indiana have become great memories and traditions of our program. This 2007 team made some huge history for Roncalli volleyball and Indiana volleyball. On September 17, this ’07 team notched the 900th win for Roncalli volleyball. Rebel volleyball ranks as one of only two programs in the state of Indiana that has won more than 900 matches. Congrats Team 2007.
