2009 Season Review
The 2009 softball season was a memorable one. The team captured the school's first Marion County Championship with a come from behind 6-5 win over rival Franklin Central. The team also secured their second consecutive Sectional Championship with a 6-2 win over Beech Grove. The season would end, once again in dramatic fashion, to New Palestine in the Regional Championship. With a 5-0 lead heading into the last inning, New Pal rallied for 6 runs, and then held on to defeat the Rebels 7-6 in extra innings.
Additionally, the team captured the Roncalli Varsity Invitational with two big wins over 1A state finalist Lutheran and 4A state finalist Floyd Central. The Rebels defeated Lutheran 2-1 in 10 innings, and held on to defeat Floyd Central 3-2. A promising weekend tournament in Owensboro, KY awaited the team, but after defeating Lakota West (OH) in round one, bad weather postponed the rest of the tournament. However, the trip was not a complete wash; South Spencer HS, in Southern Indiana, was gracious enough to host some games on their field. The team was able to get in two more games, earn two more victories, and create some great memories.
Several individual and career school records were broken this season. Jennifer Barnett will leave Roncalli as the schools all-time leading hitter with a .548 career batting average, 193 hits, and 46 doubles. Megan Murdoch will leave Roncalli as the schools leader in career RBI with 105, and home runs with 12. Kaitlyn Shaw finishes her career as the school's leader in sacrifices with 30. Freshman Taylor Bogardus stormed onto the scene and established the school's single season home run record with 8.
The 2009 team also rewrote the record book setting several new season records, including: .425 team batting average, 329 total hits, 63 doubles, 26 home runs, 212 RBI, and .968 defensive fielding percentage.
