Boys' Track & Field
2017 Season Preview
The boy’s track and field team enters the 2017 season with high hopes and big expectations. The team boasts its largest numbers ever at just under 100 athletes including several 2016 Regional qualifying athletes. The team is chasing the 2006 team’s legacy and could end up as the best team Roncalli has ever fielded. The 2017 edition has the opportunity to surpass team records in terms of points scored at the Sectional, the Regional and number of events qualified for the state meet.
In the sprints senior Gabe Otley, a 2016 state qualifier in the 400m returns as well as sprint/hurdle captains Kurt Cunningham and Michael Otley. In addition to the 400m, Gabe will look to help the 4X400m relay team compete for a state qualifying spot. The relay returns three legs from last year’s team that placed 4th at the Regional, missing the state meet by just one place. Myles Lyngh and Kurt Cunningham also return from the 4X400m relay that ran the second fastest time in school history. Additionally in the sprints, the team will count on Michael Dill, Cade Morgan, Tyler Swiezy and Cam Fath to compete for varsity spots and earn points.
In the middle distance events Myles Lyngh and mid-distance captain Luke Smock return from a2016 4X800m relay that also placed 4th at the Regional and, like the 4X400m, ran the second fastest time in school history. Grant Latimer, Chandler Gibson and newcomer Davis Cunningham will compete to round out the relay team. The Rebels have a lot of young depth coming up and mid-distance should be a strength of the team.
The distance events will be held down by two returning Regional qualifiers: Neil O’Brien in the 1600m and Nick Perkins in the 3200m. This past Fall, Perkins, a 2016 Marion County Freshmen Champ, set a new school record on the cross country course.
The field events should be another area of strength as the Rebels return one of the top discus throwers in the area; field event Captain Will English placed 4th at the 2016 Regional. Additionally, high jumper Cade Mitchell returns as one of the top jumpers after qualifying for the Regional in 2016. Hayden Moran is an improved pole vaulter and has the potential to score in every meet. Long jumper Sam Sedgwick was a Marion County place winner in 2016 as a sophomore and looks to continue the recent tradition of long jump as a team strength.
