2009-2010 Season Preview

The Lady Rebels are gearing up for another exciting season! With all but one starter returning and a lot of players with varsity experience, the reigning Sectional Champion Lady Rebels have a lot to look forward to this season. As All-County performers a year ago, seniors Natalie Cahill and Caitlin Hansen look to lead a young, yet experienced team. Juniors Alexis Waugh, Brittny Williams, Megan Allard, Hannah Hasty, and Keagin Green all return with some varsity experience. While Sophomores Katie Brewer and CoCo Clark both played major roles in the Lady Rebels success last year with Brewer also receiving All-County Honorable Mention honors. This group along with some of the girls moving up from JV and incoming Freshman Bridget Perry, the Lady Rebels season has the potential to be a great one.

Rebels Win Second Straight Sectional Title

Roncalli outplayed and outhustled southside rival Beech Grove on the Hornets' home floor to win their second consecutive girls sectional title Saturday night 52-43.

Beech Grove scored perhaps its biggest win of the season in Friday night's convincing win over Brebeuf Jesuit 67-43 and looked to do the same against Roncalli in the sectional title game. But their defensive schemes did little to slow down the Rebels.

Last year, Roncalli beat the Hornets in the first round before winning its first sectional title since the 2003-04 season. In this year's title game, Roncalli outrebounded the Hornets and dominated in converting second-change points.

Freshman forward Bridget Perry, who scored 10 points in the first half, led the Roncalli scoring attack in an offensive scheme that did not have any trouble against the defensive pressure Beech Grove attempted to deploy. The Rebels dominated the game from the opening tipoff .

Beech Grove scored the first basket of the game, but the Rebels outscored the Hornets 16-7 the rest of the way in the opening quarter and was really never threatened by the Hornets' offense or defense.

Roncalli now moves onto the Mount Vernon Regional where it will play the winner from the Franklin County sectional at noon on February 20.

Rebels handle fourth-quarter run
The Hornets had a run in the decisive fourth quarter and was in position to make it interesting when sophomore forward Shelby Fults' basket cut it to 45-33 with 5:22 remaining in the game. Beech Grove could not get any closer, only managing to get within nine points on several occasions before the Rebels pulled away for the win.

Roncalli head coach Sara Reideman said her team may not have played its best in the semifinal win over Northwest the previous night, but said the Rebels came out ready to play against Beech Grove.

"Last night, we just did not show any emotion," Reideman. "It came through in how we played on the court."

Roncalli scored 15 points off of turnovers by Beech Grove compared to only three for the Hornets, but one of the biggest keys of the game may be its 23 second-chance points compared to only seven for the Hornets.

Rebels were prepared for Hornets' press
"The second chance points are huge, especially in a sectional game like this one," Reideman said. "It means we are getting the ball and scoring and not allowing them to get the ball and take it down the court with a possibility to score."

Beech Grove was successful with its defensive press against Brebeuf Jesuit, but Reideman said her team was prepared for it, especially since they saw it in the regular season.

"They did it the first time we played them, and we were ready for it again," Reideman said. "Our girls did a great job handling it and that was one of the differences in the game."

Perry, who led all Rebels scorers with 21 points, did not let any pressure get to her while playing in her first sectional championship and reiterated what her coach said about the Beech Grove defense.

"We were able to get some quick scores and that really helped," Perry said. "We definitely did practice for the defensive pressure because we saw what they did to Brebeuf Jesuit."

It did not take Perry long to settle down after the tipoff.

"I had a little nerves before the game," Perry said. "They got better once we started to play the game, and they did not bother me the rest of it."

Roncalli hit 27 free throws compared to only 11 for the Hornets, but Beech Grove did hold the edge for players who scored off the bench with 28 points compared to only four for the Rebels.

CoCo Clark scored 14 points -- including three 3-pointers, and Katie Brewer add 12 for the Rebels as the only other players to score in double figures. Senior Brittany Utterback was the lone Hornet in double figures with 12.
