RONCALLI SPIRIT- LOUD and PROUD!!!!
Since early June, the Roncalli Cheerleaders have been practicing and conditioning for the football and basketball cheering seasons. Thirty-three talented athletes make up the three cheer squads for this winter season—12 Varsity, 8 JV and 11 Freshmen.
The girls have been working very hard since early summer to learn chants and cheers that will get the crowd going this year. As always, they spent time brainstorming on ways to keep raising the spirit at Roncalli. In late July-early August, the girls attended a four day National Cheerleader Association cheer camp at Purdue University where they competed with over 300 girls from around the state, including the familiar local schools of Speedway, Carmel, Brebeuf, and Martinsville. Just as in recent years, the girls were recognized by the camp for having tremendous spirit and leadership. The competition was tough, but the girls brought home numerous awards and ribbons including the Varsity squad receiving the overall Spirit Award, which is voted on by the other squads at camp. This is an awesome accomplishment considering the remarkable August heat that the girls encountered each day at camp. In addition to this, the girls were awarded a spirit stick on a daily basis and again at closing ceremonies. Varsity also won the Herkie team award on two separate occasions during camp. This award is also voted on by other squads at camp. It is given to the squad that demonstrates a positive attitude and works well as a team. Our teams were also recognized for excellence in motions and jumping technique. The Freshmen squad was also given a Top Team trophy in their division. But most of all camp was a wonderful bonding experience for the girls.
Four members of the Varsity squad, one JV cheerleader, and five freshman cheerleaders were awarded the All American Cheerleader Award. This prestigious award is given after week-long nominations and a tryout on the last night of camp, to the most talented in all aspects of cheering. Congratulations to the All American winners for 2006: Senior: Lisa Singleton, Juniors: Kellie Kunard and Amy Sanders, Sophomores: Brooke Lutgring and Kara Miller, and Freshmen: Tori Becher, Katie Carson, Claire Corn, Jordan Knecht, and Anna Mariutto.
In December, the girls will be hosting their ever- popular annual cheer clinic for grade school girls; expecting once again over 200 girls from surrounding schools. The cheerleaders are really looking forward to the upcoming basketball season and are especially excited about the “theme games” and cheer dances! They hope to lead the crowd to the highest level of spirit ever! The cheerleaders plan to lead by example and stay true to
their motto:
RONCALLI SPIRIT- LOUD and PROUD!!!
