Boys Basketball 2016-17 Review

The boys basketball team finished its season with a 17-9 record, extending the program’s streak of seasons with 10 wins or more to 15 seasons. Only 19 boys basketball programs in Indiana have an active streak of at least 15 seasons of 10 wins or more. Despite losing a total of 47 player games to injury, the 2016-17 Rebels won more games than all but three teams in the 48-year history of the program. Two other teams (2008-09, 2011-12) won 17 games. For the third time in six seasons, the Rebels advanced to the sectional final. In the first round of the sectional, the Rebels rallied from 13 down with 7:30 remaining to beat Perry Meridian 49-46 in one of the great postseason comebacks in program history.

This year’s team played 10 games against teams ranked in the top 64 of the Sagarin computer state rankings and split those games with wins over Beech Grove (twice), Brebeuf Jesuit, Cathedral and Floyd Central. Two of those wins – Beech Grove and Floyd Central – were on the road. The win over Floyd Central came in the title game of the Floyd Central Holiday Tournament. The Rebels were the only team to win at Floyd Central, as the Highlanders went 10-1 at home. Three Roncalli opponents – Lafayette Central Catholic, Center Grove and Ben Davis -- won sectional titles. As a result, the Rebels played one of the 35 most-difficult schedules in the state. In addition to compiling 17 wins, the 2016-17 Rebels were the first team in program history to advance to the final four of the Marion County Tournament. They advanced to the semifinal round with wins over Perry Meridian (69-61) and Beech Grove (72-50). Eventual tourney champion Pike eliminated the Rebels 48-41 in a hard-fought semifinal.

Senior guard Christian Stewart averaged a team-best 15.6 points per game, despite missing the final 13 games of the season with a broken left ankle. In his final game before the injury, he set a program record, hitting 7-of-7 3-point attempts in a win over Beech Grove. Senior Collin Sonderman averaged 11.0 points and a team-best 7.0 rebounds. He also suffered a season-ending injury, breaking his right foot in the sectional first-round comeback win over Perry Meridian. In that game, he scored 16 points and pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds. Sonderman finished his career appearing in 68 varsity games, which is tied for the sixth-most in program history. Junior Kellen Schreiber averaged a career-high 10.6 points. He averaged 7.1 points in the first half of the season and 13.3 points after Stewart’s injury. He also led the team in field goal percentage (.632). Junior Bryson Meek led the team in assists (93), blocked shots (14) and free throws made (82). Junior Conner Gore led the team in 3-pointers made (23) and 3-point percentage (.511). Junior Joe Kirkhoff led the team in free throw percentage (.841). Meek, Kirkhoff and fellow junior Jack Hegwood were the only three players to appear in all 26 games.
