The Roncalli Report Card

by Joseph D. Hollowell, President of Roncalli

Our school is so blessed with such a wonderful group of teachers, ministers, and role models that I have to constantly remind myself that it is not like this everywhere.  It is easy to take for granted.  I was reminded of that again at the beginning of this school year.  Before our students ever arrived for the first day of school our faculty, staff, and administration gathered for an evening of reflection on our mission.  Math teacher Jeff Small gave an absolutely inspiring reflection on his understanding of our unique and sacred role as teachers in a Catholic school.  "All education consists essentially in preparing man for what he must be and for what he must do here below in order to obtain the sublime end for which he was created.  It is clear that there can be no true education which is not wholly directed to man's last end.  And since God the Son is alone the way, the truth, and the life there can be no ideally perfect education which is not Christian education."  With those words, taken from Pope Pius XI's encyclical, "On the Christian Education of Youth", Jeff proceeded to weave a tapestry of ideas and insights which left no doubt in the minds of those in attendance that the Christ-centered education that our students receive at Roncalli is the purest and most lasting form of education in which a young person can be engaged.

This commitment to the education and spiritual formation of the immortal souls of our students will always remain our first priority.  It is not always listed as the top reason people are seeking out our school.  But it is undoubtedly the reason we exist.  St. Augustine famously wrote to God that "You made us for Your own and our hearts are restless until they rest in You".  It is our essential task to aid parents in helping their children understand Who it is that has made them and what it is that He has called them to do.

With that primary role of our school being established and clarified, there is another very important function of our school and that is the intellectual formation of our students.  Good formation in this area prepares our students for whatever task it is to which God is calling them.  Today's world is placing increasing importance on measuring how well individual schools are fulfilling this task of intellectual formation.  Given the growing competitiveness of the global economy that our students will surely be a part of, the increasing emphasis on measuring the effectiveness of schools is understandable.  It is in this spirit of the times that the Indiana Department of Education has become more and more focused on measuring and reporting the performance of all of our schools.  Parents especially deserve this information as they make decisions about the education of their children.

The four pages that follow represent our report to our community as to how Roncalli is performing  in some of the categories that the Indiana Department of Education is measuring.  You can get even more complete information on the DOE website which is at www.doe.in.gov.  The "Report Card" that follows should be a wonderful encouragement to all of those who are sacrificing on behalf of the work of our school.  The results that we are showing in this important area of school life reflect the commitment of our teachers, our parents, our parish schools, our pastors, and our many benefactors.  And finally, the enormous commitment that is required to operate a school like Roncalli cannot happen without God's blessing on our work.  And that is surely evident as well!

God be praised and thank you all for your partnership in our work.
