2020 Girls Soccer Season Review
Behind three consecutive shutouts, the girls soccer team won the program’s 10th sectional title and first since 2016. Roncalli held Southport (2-0), Franklin Central (1-0) and Lawrence North (2-0) scoreless, representing only the third time in program history that the team won a Sectional title without allowing a goal. The team finished the season with a 10-7-1 record and posted a 10-1-1 record when scoring at least one goal, with the only loss coming to Mount Vernon in the Regional semi-final. The team started 4-0-1 for its best start in five years. That run included a 2-0 road win over Cathedral, which reached the Class 2A State Final, and a 2-1 road win at Columbus East. Over the course of the season, Roncalli allowed 15 goals in 18 games (and 11 goals through the first 17 games), with nine shutouts.
Junior defender Abbey Scheil was named the team’s MVP and sophomore midfielder Micah Waugh earned the team’s Mental Attitude award. Scheil was chosen to the All-District First Team by the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association (ISCA), while senior Chiara Schilten was named ISCA Second Team All-District and Waugh was named the ISCA Top Team Player. Additionally, Scheil was named All-State honorable mention by the ISCA. Scheil was also named Second Team All-State by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSC), while Schilten was named Third Team All-State by the ICGSC. Scheil and Schilten both made the All-Marion County and All-Circle City Conference teams and Waugh joined them on the All-County team.
Roncalli placed nine players on the ISCA’s Academic All-State honor roll. Scheil, Schilten, senior defender Lauren Prather, senior defender Olivia Kelley, junior goalkeeper Emma Agresta, junior forward Cate Lehner, junior forward Kathryn Madriz, junior midfielder Ainsley Newett and junior midfielder Sophia Saran all made the list. Schilten, Prather and Kelley were also chosen to the Academic All-State list by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Assocation (ICGSA).
