2017 Season Review
A young boys soccer team finished with an 8-10-1 record. Despite graduating nine seniors from last year’s squad, this year’s team advanced to the sectional final for the fourth straight season. The Rebels won two postseason games, including a 2-1 sectional semifinal victory over a 13-win Franklin team on its home pitch. Among the memorable regular season efforts was a home comeback against Franklin Central, when the Rebels turned a 3-0 deficit into a 3-3 draw. Additionally, the Rebels beat rival Southport twice – 3-2 in the season opener and 2-1 in overtime in the opening round of the Marion County Tournament.
Junior midfielder Robert Thang earned the team’s MVP award. He was a Top Team selection and second team All-District selection by the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association (ISCA). Thang was joined on the All-Circle City Conference team by junior goalkeeper Daniel Woodruff. Senior Zach Wallem was named the team’s mental attitude award winner. Woodruff, senior Luke Dow and juniors Wes Cunningham and Mateo Gonzalez were all picked to the Academic All-State team by the state’s coaches.
