Baseball Earns Sectional Crown
by Rob Brown, 2 yrs agoe fourth-ranked Roncalli baseball team captured the program’s 14th sectional title with a 10-0, five-inning road win over Ben Davis earlier today. After building a 1-0 lead through two innings, the Rebels added two more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by senior Nick Schnell. Roncalli broke the game open with a seven-run fifth inning. Sophomore Alex Stroud, junior Brian Keeney and senior Mark Cobb all singled in runs in the inning. Junior Max Lundy pitched a shutout, allowing only three hits, while striking out eight batters and walking only one.
Today’s sectional title is Roncalli’s fourth since moving up to Class 4A in 2012 and its third straight. It’s the first time in program history that the Rebels have won three straight sectional titles. Roncalli, winners of 15 straight games and owners of a 25-5 record, plays Cathedral (20-8-1) in the regional round next Saturday, June 2 at Decatur Central. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
The Rebels have won eight regional titles, with the most recent one coming in 2016.
