Boys Golf 2020 Preview

This promises to be an exciting season for the Rebels golf team. The team returns four starters from a team that broke a Roncalli postseason scoring record (298) and advanced to regionals, before narrowly losing to the eventual state runners-up. Three seniors are leading the charge. The first is three-year varsity starter and two-time returning team MVP Luke Poole. He has been the model of consistency, while leading the team in scoring average the last two years. He has also shown the ability to go low, with a career-low 18-hole score of 3-under par 69. He has high hopes for the season, reporting in the best shape of his life and hoping to make some noise at state this year after narrowly missing out the last two years. His twin brother, Mark Poole, is also a three-year returning starter. After a slow start in the 2019 sectional tournament, Mark showed tremendous grit and came back with a blistering 4-under par 32 on his back 9. He followed that up with 76 at regionals and narrowly missed a trip to the state tournament. He is anxious to rewrite that story and make a deep run in the state finals. The third returning senior is team leader Peyton Zins. He inspires and entertains the team everyday while starting for the varsity in every event during his junior campaign. He continues to work hard and will play a key role in helping the team make a run in the state tournament. The final returning starter is junior Conner Wray. He led the team at sectionals firing a 1-under par 71. He has started varsity his whole career and is fired up for 2020.

There is an opening spot or two available and there are a host of players from the JV squad anxious to grab them. Returning from a solid JV season are juniors Noah Fleming and Graeham Watt and sophomores Joe Akers and John Hammerschmitt. They have all shown flashes of solid play and show the potential to compete for the varsity in 2020. There is also a strong freshman class and some other newcomers looking to compete.

All things considered, with hard work, this team has a chance to be the best ever fielded at Roncalli. That is a challenge this group is ready to match.
