Meet the 2018-2019 Coaching Staff
Michael Wantz – Head Varsity Coach
Michael Wantz begins his 17th year as the Roncalli boys' basketball coach. He owns a career coaching record of 241-117 and became the school’s all-time leader in wins when the Rebels defeated Brebeuf in the 2009 Sectional championship game. He has led the Rebels to their only four sectional championships in school history, to double figure wins in each of his first sixteen years, and to the school’s first conference championship this past year.
Wantz is a 1993 graduate of Union City Community High School where he lettered in basketball, baseball and tennis. He received his bachelor’s degree from Ball State University where he was a student assistant with the men’s basketball team. Wantz has also served as an assistant coach at Wilberforce University and the University of Indianapolis.
Wantz has a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Indianapolis and is currently teaching in the Business department at Roncalli. Michael and wife Abby have a son, Eli, and two daughters, Zoey and Piper.
Ian Brown – Varsity Assistant
Ian Brown begins his seventh year on the Rebel staff after 20 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, with 10 as the head men's basketball coach at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. He left Doane with the second-most wins in the program's history, coaching six players who earned an all-american status at the NAIA level and 25 NAIA Scholar-Athlete All-Americans. Prior to Doane, Brown was an assistant at Lincoln Memorial University (TN) and the University of Indianapolis. Brown is a teacher in the Physical Education and Health department and resides in Brownsburg with his two children, Cameryn and Crew.
John Hasty – Varsity Assistant
John Hasty begins his fifth year on the Rebel coaching staff. Coach Hasty graduated from Roncalli in 2008, and was a four year member of the basketball team. The record of the varsity the two years he was a part of the team was 34-8. He attended Marian University, playing a significant role in the Knights’ national championship football team. Hasty served as a graduate football assistant at Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio. He currently teaches World History in the Roncalli Social Studies department. He is married to Shelia Elsener (R ‘10) and has one son, Luke.
Jamin Wernke - JV Head Coach
Jamin Wernke begins his 12th year on the Rebel coaching staff, and ninth as head junior varsity coach. Coach Wernke’s two previous coaching stops were at St. Barnabas and Morristown High School. He is a 2002 graduate of Roncalli High School, where he was a four-year member of the basketball program. Wernke is currently the athletic director at Holy Name and is married to Angela Grant (R ’03). Together they have two daughters, Avery and Anniston, and a son, Jimmy.
Justin Agresta – JV Assistant Coach
Justin Agresta is in his 15th season as a coach in the Rebel program, and his eighth as a junior varsity assistant coach. Agresta is a 2003 Roncalli grad and was a two-year starter for the Rebels, graduating as the school record holder for assists in a game. He attended the University of Indianapolis and is currently employed at Agresta, Storms & O’Leary, PC as an accountant. He and his wife Shawna reside on the southside of Indianapolis.
Justin Wernke - Freshmen Head Coach
Justin Wernke begins his 11th year on the Rebel coaching staff, and his ninth as the head freshman coach. He played four years of high school basketball at Roncalli and was a starter on the 2006 Sectional championship team. Wernke has also coached at St. Barnabas and is a sales rep at Piazza Produce. He and his wife, Lauren, reside in Speedway.
Christopher Fey - Freshmen Assistant Coach
Christopher Fey is entering his first year as a freshman assistant coach. Coach Fey is a 2014 Roncalli graduate and was a four year member of the basketball program. He was an integral member of the 2013-14 team that defeated Warren Central in the sectional and battled state champion Tech in the sectional final. After Roncalli, Christopher attended Ball State University and is currently employed by Cityscape Residential.
