Wrestling 2016-2017 Review

In a season full of team accomplishments, freshman Alec Viduya delivered the program’s biggest achievement of the season by winning a state title in the 113-pound class. Viduya is Roncalli’s first wrestling state champion since 1985 and the fourth overall. He finished his inaugural high school season with a 47-2 record.

Under first-year head coach Wade McClurg, the wrestling team earned the program’s first sectional title since 2011, and in the process, defeated Warren Central, the defending state champions. The sectional title was the program’s ninth overall. The team advanced 13 wrestlers to the regional round, where the team finished second. The following week, nine wrestlers competed at semi-state and the team finished third. Freshman Tyce Freije joined Viduya at the state final. Freije finished eighth in the 120-pound class, capping off a 38-10 record in his first varsity season.

The team compiled a 19-3 regular-season record and won the first Circle City Conference wrestling title. At the conference meet, the Rebels won all 14 weight classes. In addition to Viduya and Freije, the group of wrestlers that advanced to semi-state were seniors Josh Hiatt and Marc Roland, junior Sam Hansen, sophomores Elijah Mahan, Brian Keeney and Trent Smith and freshman Sam Slivka. Hansen also won a Marion County title.

Viduya was named the team’s MVP and Hansen earned the mental attitude award. Hansen was also named first team Academic All-State by the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association (IHSWCA). Roland and Hiatt were tabbed as honorable mention Academic All-State selections by the IHSWCA.

The program was selected to participate in the IHSWCA 3A Team State Duals on December 23, 2017. The Rebels will compete with 11 other schools at the event in Fort Wayne.
