EILAND, SCHNELL EARN STATE PLAYER OF THE YEAR HONORS
by Rob Brown, 10 mos agoncalli High School setter Sam Eiland and centerfielder Nick Schnell were named the 2018 IndyStar Sports Award winners for their respective sports of volleyball and baseball. The awards are given out to recognize the state’s best player in a particular sport. The Indianapolis Star announced the nine spring sports winners over the weekend and Roncalli High School was the only school that had multiple winners.
Eiland just completed his junior season, in which he helped lead Roncalli to a 29-2 record and the 2018 Indiana Boys Volleyball Coaches Association state championship. In winning the program’s first state title, the Rebels lost only nine sets all season. Eiland earned all-state, all-state tournament and all-conference honors. He led the state in assists with 848 and had 48 service aces, which was fourth-most in the state. His kill percentage ranked ninth in the state.
Schnell, who graduated from Roncalli last month, was selected last night by the Tampa Bay Rays in the first round (32nd overall selection) of the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft. He finished his Roncalli career with a .473 career batting average, 25 home runs and 109 RBIs. Over his 112-game, four-year varsity career, Schnell compiled career school records for batting average (.473), hits (155), home runs (25), RBIs (109), runs (151) and walks (101). In his senior season, Schnell hit .535 with 15 home runs and 37 RBIs from the leadoff spot. He established new program single-season records for home runs (15), runs scored (52) and walks (41) while leading the Rebels to a 25-6 record and sectional and Marion County Tournament titles. As a sophomore, Schnell started in centerfield and hit .435 for the 2016 Class 4A State Champions. He currently plays for the Gulf Coast Rays, which is a rookie league team of the Tampa Bay Rays, in the Gulf Coast League.
