Roncalli Boys Volleyball Wins State Title
by Rob Brown, 1 mo agoThe Roncalli Rebels captured the 2018 IBVCA (Indiana Boys Volleyball Coaches Association) state title yesterday with a four-game win over Cathedral in a match played at Southport. The Rebels won the first game 25-16, dropped the second game 23-25 and won the final two games 25-20 and 25-22. Roncalli advanced to the championship match with a three-game win (25-22, 25-16, 25-21) over defending state champion Carmel in the semifinal round. Yesterday’s title is the boys volleyball program’s first state championship.
“This was an amazing team,” said coach John Kesterson. “Everyone had a role in the system and executed it to near perfection, but the team was truly led by the seniors. They are amazing individual athletes, but they suspended all ego and supported each other no matter what. Their sacrifice to do what was best for the team led us to the title.”
Seniors Nick Williams and Blake Powell, as well as junior Sam Eiland were named to the all-tournament team. Williams was named the tournament’s MVP.
Roncalli, who finished as state runners-up in 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015, concluded its season with a 29-3 record.
